Matron Figures

Artist Statement:

Inspiration for these figures were the West African Fertility Doll, the Akua'ba. These modified images are used as a storyteller to express the energy of my ancestors and mentors.

"Children Ought To Play" represent abused children. Rings are common in my work. They are used to suggest physical and spiritual prosperity in the adult figures and wisdom beyond their years in the crouching children figures.

"Pocketbooks" and "Twisted Sisters" represent days of youth and experimentation.

"Matrons" are commemorative. They are usually  inspired by women that nurture.
